The U.S. Navy warship USS Vandegrift arrived on scene earlier this morning and the ship will wait until dawn before starting the transfer of the ill child, Coast Guard officials said.

Eric Kaufman and his wife, Charlotte, the parents of the seriously ill girl planned to cross the Pacific on a cruise around the world, and had left Mexico two weeks ago with their daughters Cora and 1-year-old Lyra.

Four Air National Guard members from the 129th Rescue Wing parachuted into the ocean, inflated a motorized boat and reached the 36-foot sailboat before the U.S Navy dispatched USS Vandegrift.
