Soldier Kills 3, injures 16 at Fort Hood

FORT HOOD, TEXAS ( — Ivan Lopez a soldier in the United States Army open fire on fellow soldiers Wednesday at Fort Hood Army base in Killeen, Texas killing three and injuring 16 others before turning the gun on himself, base officials said.

The Gunman Ivan Lopez, a 34 year old specialist in the United States Army that was assigned to the 13th Sustainment Command open fire just before the workday ended Wednesday in the first medical brigade area at Fort Hood, the same military base that was attacked in 2009 by U.S. Army Major Hasan who is now on death row.

LT. Gen. Mark Milley, the acting commander at Fort Hood, told reporters that Lopez was stationed at Fort Hood since February, and served in Iraq for four months. Milley added that the motive was unclear, but that Lopez was undergoing mental health treatment for a number of health issues including post-traumatic stress (PTSD).

“He was undergoing behavior health and psychiatric treatment for depression and anxiety and a variety of other psychological and psychiatric issues,” Milley said at a news conference. “There are reports that he self-reported a traumatic brain injury, previously, coming back from Iraq.”
